The Basque Country is located in the north of Spain, on the border with France. They have their own language, Euskera, so there are two names for each city, such as San Sebastián and Donosti (the latter, in Euskera).

Like the rest of Spain, the Basque Country has a lot of history. However, its economic boom took place more recently, in the mid-nineteenth century, when an important coal and metal industry was developed in the area, mainly pushed by British businessmen. As a result, the Basque Country became the industrial engine of Spain.
Nonetheless, this region also has many historical monuments, such as the castle of Butrón. Fun fact: the first Spanish soccer team was founded in the Basque Country, and it is called Athletic de Bilbao.
Nowadays, its beautiful villages have attracted several movie and television producers. For instance, a town called San Juan de Gaztelugatxe was used as Dragonstone during the filming of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon.
Basque cuisine is well-known in the whole country. Because of their connection to the sea, some of their most famous dishes are based on fish: cod with Spanish pil pil sauce, Basque-style codfish stew, clams the sailor’s way, etc. However, one of its most famous dishes are pinchos or pintxos, as they say in Euskera, which are very similar to tapas.
