Canary Islands
The Canary Islands are an archipelago consisting of seven main islands. Funnily enough, even if they constitute a single region, they are divided into two provinces, and hence they have two capital cities which are placed on the two main islands: Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

Just like Hawaii, the Canary Islands have a volcanic origin. As a result, beach sand has a very particular black shade. The most famous volcano in the islands is the Teide Peak, which is also the highest point on Spanish soil.
These islands are actually very close to Africa, and a bit far from the Spanish mainland, which is located next to France. It may take up to three hours to get from the peninsula to the Canary Islands, but it is definitely worth the flight.
In the past, the Canary Islands were a vital stop before crossing the ocean to the New World. At the end of the day, they are placed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This, together with the fact that there is a strong wind that blows in the area, made them a perfect stop in the route of the brave sailors that were trying to reach America. As a result, the population of the Canary Islands started to grow. That golden period is also reflected in the architecture, especially in towns such as La Laguna —whose name means “pond”, and which was founded on a former lagoon.

As far as food is concerned, the Canary Islands are especially famous for their potatoes and for the sauces that they use to garnish dishes. In addition, they enjoy a close relationship with Latin America that has resulted in a mixture of cuisines which is unique to the region.
